Oswaldo Gonçalves Cruz was born, just as I, in São Luiz do Paraitinga on August 5, 1872.

He left São Luiz at the age of 5, because his parents went to Rio de Janeiro. He studied and graduated in Medicine. Cruz worked as a doctor until 1896 when he moved to Paris where he worked at the Pasteur Institute for 3 years to improve his knowledge in bacteriology field.
In 1904, Cruz extinguished the yellow fever from Rio de Janeiro, although the population didn't accept to be vaccinated, in an event that become known as "Revolta da Vacina" (vaccine revolt).

At the end of his life, he was the mayor of Petrópolis, where Cruz died on February 11, 1914.
